Why the Yes campaign couldn’t win over voters

An analysis paper by Octopus Group and Accent Research showed No campaign claims about the Voice being a divisive proposal turned off the largest share of voters, as many conceded they did not understand the proposal before voting day.

The research found only just over 50 per cent of Australians believe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders face more discrimination than non-Indigenous people,undercutting a key argument for the Voice.


Other reasons voters gave for voting No to the Voice included perceptions there were more important issues to focus on, and the advisory body would not do anything to help Indigenous people improve their position.
