The intergenerational politics of asset ownership in Australia
27 March 2025
The 2025 federal election may be one of the closest in decades but voters are clear about one thing: their dissatisfaction with high rents and mortgages and the lack of affordable housing in Australia. We present an expert panel of three speakers on the electoral dynamics of housing and the likely impact of policies and housing stress on the demographics of the vote in April or May. We also ask whether a hung parliament is more or less likely to produce a clear response to the housing crisis or only add to Australia's housing policy problem.
Speakers:
Professor Nicole Gurran, Urban and Regional Planning, University of Sydney
Associate Professor Ben Spies-Butcher, Sociology, Macquarie University
Dr Shaun Ratcliff, Accent Research
Introduced by Professor Gaby Ramia, University of Sydney, and chaired by Dr Lloyd Cox, Macquarie University
